Breck Jarman and the Bear City Opry celebrate Independence Day with an evening of patriotic music Saturday at the Masonic Theater on Hancock Street.

The week’s highlight events begin four days of Independence Day weekend celebrations around the area, but there are several other events on tap that have a ring of freedom.

It begins tonight with what should be a spirited talk by Ret. Maj. Gen. Tom Braaten at a pre-July 4 gathering of the Pamlico County Historical Association.

The New Bern-Craven County Public Library has a busy week, beginning today with registration for the 2011 Summer Reading Program.

The program is entitled “One World, Many Stories,” and is scheduled July 1-29.

Also today, the Book Discussion Club continues its “A Novel Idea” series. This month’s selection is “Life of Pi,” by Yann Martel.

The 1 p.m. program in the Hayden H. Jones Auditorium is free, and books are available at the library.

On Wednesday, the “Bingo Round the World” series continues at 4 p.m. It is free and there are prizes.

In addition to Braaten’s speech, “Freedom, Who Owns It?”, at tonight’s onight’s Pamlico County Historical Association the Pamlico County Veterans Council will participate and Lupton McClanahan will sing the national anthem.

The public is invited to the 7 p.m. event and welcome to wear July 4 celebration-style clothing. Refreshments will be served.

The Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association sponsors an Open Mic TEA Party Rally Friday evening at Union Point Park.

The 6 to 9 p.m. event is promoted to celebrate freedom of speech.

Participants must register to have a say and will have four minutes to give their opinion on any relevant subject. Organizers invite all local public officials to also attend.

Athens of the South holds its next-to-last performance of “Miss Murple’s Last Case” Friday at the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina.

The final show is July 8, and both 7 p.m. shows have dinner and the show running concurrently.

Director and actor Bill Hand said it involves comic detectives, spies, and a butler-in-disguise.

The audience participates in solving the case and prizes are available.

Every two years, the Perrytown community hosts a Community and Family Reunion Day.

The reunion spans three days this year, beginning with a Friday night 6:30 p.m. dance at the community center on Perrytown Road in the Brice’s Creek area.

On Saturday, the community center is the site of a noon to 5 p.m. ticketed event, which includes live music, games and activities and lunch.

The weekend concludes with an 11 a.m. homecoming church service Sunday at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, also on Perrytown Road. A homecoming dinner follows the service.
