I like animals all right — I'm vegetarian — but I don't want them anywhere near my garden.

I have a small deck that extends off the second floor of my house, overlooking all this activity in the way you would imagine the sniper at the edges of the prison yard or, more nicely, Eva Peron addressing her people. The roster

I have mentioned before that I think my garden space is about 120 square feet. It is irregularly shaped, and the math is not important to me. But the space is ample — about all I like to handle — and easily accommodates three good-sized rows for planting.

My best performers through the years have been Jet Star, Supersonic and Beefsteak tomatoes. They are tried-and-true, mass-marketed varieties that I can practically grow with my eyes closed. Every year I beat myself up a little for returning to these.
